Is mushroom spawn an acceptable giveaway item?
« on: December 06, 2015, 07:21:51 PM »

Is mushroom spawn an acceptable giveaway item? I was thinking of doing a Black Reishi (Ganoderma sinensis) spawn giveaway in the near future. It's an easy, rare and rewarding mushroom to grow. Great medicinal. Is this acceptable?

I also wonder this, as my Garden giant patch needs to be cut back.

I really wanna get into growing edible/medicinal mushies. I have a semi large food forest garden mulched heavily which mainly oak mulch. If I were to take a jar of reishi spawn and bury it under the mulch would it grow? Or do I need a live oak tree to symbioticly grow with them?

If it's buried and moist it will fruit. I'll post a how to when I get to it. There's some stuff I began to post in the mushroom section. I'll have to work on it.

The mycellum doesnt really become old amd exhausted any time soon, isnt it ? They can become so old its pretty irrelevant for I only have a human lifespan. That means as long as I supply it adequate food and conditions it will spread, fruit and I can share spawn too ?

Mycelium expands very quickly and will become senecent within a decade for most wild saprobic species. Micorhizal can live much longer. Most five pound blocks will fruit a small portion of their total weight, and will no longer fruit after several months. A pound of mushrooms per five pounds of substrate would be typical.

Keep your extra spawn outdoors in wood chips and feed it when it looks like it's running out. This can take a season or several, depending on the species and resources they have. They will keep producing if you take care of them.

I'll open up a giveaway of my stropharia patch if anyone wants in. Just pay postage and I'll send it off! It is dormant now, but can be woken with food and warmth. Pm any questions you have about what this entails.

My setup is small but growing quickly. I have a lot of stuff to work with. I can get a list together and see what y'all want if I have the extra resources for the endevor.

Still not getting it: So is it basically eternal living / clonable or must it be propagated sexually in the future to preserve its vigor ?

Not eternal like plants are. In a slant a small portion of preserved mycelium can be kept in cryogenic for thirty or so years. A living myceliall mass must reproduce within its lifespan to continue its genetics.

I have heard of mycelium that are millenia old, if Im not mistaking, how so ? Is it a special
2400 years ... http://www.extremescience.com/biggest-living-thing.htm i'd be perfectly fine if one could stay 2400 years or at least be clones over and over again over that lifespan :D My grand grand grand grand children would be happy about the fungus too btw :D

Armillaria mushrooms can live that long in the wild. They are parasites. Largest organism on earth! In general mushrooms grow slower and live longer in the wild.
