Title: Is mushroom spawn an acceptable giveaway item?
Post by: FewTrueSeed on December 06, 2015, 07:21:51 PM
Is mushroom spawn an acceptable giveaway item? I was thinking of doing a Black Reishi (Ganoderma sinensis) spawn giveaway in the near future. It's an easy, rare and rewarding mushroom to grow. Great medicinal. Is this acceptable?

I also wonder this, as my Garden giant patch needs to be cut back.

Perfect trade material.

I really wanna get into growing edible/medicinal mushies. I have a semi large food forest garden mulched heavily which mainly oak mulch. If I were to take a jar of reishi spawn and bury it under the mulch would it grow? Or do I need a live oak tree to symbioticly grow with them?

Yeah ! Thou shalt supply detailed information on how it works and you may find more takers.

If it's buried and moist it will fruit. I'll post a how to when I get to it. There's some stuff I began to post in the mushroom section. I'll have to work on it.

I would love some spawn of this!

Just doing Oysters at the moment but could easily take on another culture!

The mycellum doesnt really become old amd exhausted any time soon, isnt it ? They can become so old its pretty irrelevant for I only have a human lifespan. That means as long as I supply it adequate food and conditions it will spread, fruit and I can share spawn too ?

Mycelium expands very quickly and will become senecent within a decade for most wild saprobic species. Micorhizal can live much longer. Most five pound blocks will fruit a small portion of their total weight, and will no longer fruit after several months. A pound of mushrooms per five pounds of substrate would be typical.

Keep your extra spawn outdoors in wood chips and feed it when it looks like it's running out. This can take a season or several, depending on the species and resources they have. They will keep producing if you take care of them.

I'll open up a giveaway of my stropharia patch if anyone wants in. Just pay postage and I'll send it off! It is dormant now, but can be woken with food and warmth. Pm any questions you have about what this entails.

My setup is small but growing quickly. I have a lot of stuff to work with. I can get a list together and see what y'all want if I have the extra resources for the endevor.

Still not getting it: So is it basically eternal living / clonable or must it be propagated sexually in the future to preserve its vigor ?
Title: Re: Is mushroom spawn an acceptable giveaway item?
Post by: FewTrueSeed on December 07, 2015, 12:26:40 PM
Not eternal like plants are. In a slant a small portion of preserved mycelium can be kept in cryogenic for thirty or so years. A living myceliall mass must reproduce within its lifespan to continue its genetics.

I have heard of mycelium that are millenia old, if Im not mistaking, how so ? Is it a special
2400 years ... http://www.extremescience.com/biggest-living-thing.htm i'd be perfectly fine if one could stay 2400 years or at least be clones over and over again over that lifespan :D My grand grand grand grand children would be happy about the fungus too btw :D

Armillaria mushrooms can live that long in the wild. They are parasites. Largest organism on earth! In general mushrooms grow slower and live longer in the wild.

When any of you mushie guys make a giveaway keep me in mind! Especially if its species that I could bury in mulch around the food forest. I gotta get me some logs and do the plug thing for several species!

Are any of these mushroom species which you're considering having a giveaway/trade frost tolerant?

Both species mentioned so far will survive below zero winters.  8)  Reishi and Wine Cap Stropharia.

A lot of what I have (and I'm assuming Tragicfalacygtr2 have) are frost tolerant. Most that I've run across are. Fungal dormancy is often times initiated by lower temperatures than it would take to fruit or colonize. There are a few that come to mind that would simply die in low temperatures, pluerotus djamor, agaricus blazei murril, and volvariella volvacea. I have none at the time, just an example of common cultivated edibles.

A lot of production facilities store their cultures or colonized substrate in coolers or fridges, and hobbyists do too. The cold intolerant species may be stored at room temperature in culture or sterile distilled water.

I have tried to fruit volvariella volvacea five or o times now. No luck. Won't fruit below 70° dies below 40°. My favorite tasting mushroom.

If anyone wants G. tsugae spoes PM me. It'll take some serious "cleaning up" work as they were collected in the field. They grow well on douglas fir.

cactus, fungus, cacti, fungi, fungi, cacti, fungus, cactus, cactus, fungus :D

Looks closer to ganoderma oregonense to me.  :D. Tsugae grows on hemlock up here.  ;)

David Arora said it was tsugae. I have no idea tho. I sent a tissue culture to a dude in Michigan that's currently DNA sequencing all the Gannoderma he can get his hands on. He seemed to think it was a tsugae because of the location and tree.

If you feel like contacting the DNA sequencing guy, he's Matt Schnick on Facebook. He's always interested in samples, fresh and dried at low heat.

I run into various reishi mushrooms growing wild down here in FL. If I were to collect a wild fresh one would anybody be down to attempt to grow them? Or send them off for analysis? If so I'll gather them for y'all when I run into some again.

Been getting a few of these blue bruisers recently from cow and horse manure I relocated to my yard. Its been exciting!

Heya Mad Planter,

If you could take photos of the reishis first, that'd be awesome.

It was coming out ta leaves on the forest floor I believe. Oaks and pines dominate the area.

Here's another different one. This was a 100 ft away from the pink one but at a different time of year.

WHOA!!!! NICE!!!

I would love a sample as well.

Do you mind if I send your photos and general location to Matt Schick? He might be interested in sequencing these.

Is it ganoderma curtisii? I've found a lot of those in the south and southeast.

Unfortunately these are old pics. They were taken in Chiefland, FL almost a year or so ago. Its my dads property roughly 3-4 hours north of me. I take documentation pics of many unusual plants and fungi. So many unknown stuff I've found.

HCC totally send off the pics and sorry tragic those guys are long gone!

The best pic ever though I couldn't get...

A few months ago my cousin and I went out picking these dung mushies that stain blue...mighty fine eating. Found about 30 that day but that's beside the story really. Anyhow we swam across a gator infested river into a large cow field so we couldn't bring our phones. Obviously would a got wet while swimming this raging smaller river after flood worthy rains. Saw some sort of polyphore mushroom on the side of a tree no lie probably 2.5 feet across by 1.5 foot out from the tree! Totally was like fuck...I need a pic of that but there was no way...

:'( . Ah Maybie next year. I would like to cross some of these closely related ganoderma. I've crossed oyster and others.  8). I have an old stump with a long dead polypore on it. Two or so feet across. I'll take a pic tomorrow. I have been having trouble with bacteria in my plates since I started up again. I need to set up a better space before I do a giveaway. Time to suck it up and get a flow hood. I'll get on it. Sporehad and I will flood folks with the fungi.

Flood it we will fine sir. Contact mikeologist. He works for a place that has hepa filters and maybe could help if you want to build.

Since I signed up here I've been hoping to bring the fungi to the forum. I should be able to send out some ganoderma species soon. I need to invest in one million syringes so i can prepare them for yall. Maybe i need a fund request thread and whoever pitches in could have some of what we make. While I'd love to give everything away, I run out of money doing so with such frequency.

I can send you 3ml syringes if you would like. I don't use them and I ordered a thousand.

Maybe? 3 ml is good for a beginner (as I think many are) but 10ml has much more life. Pm with your qty. I have 100 1ml already. I do a lot of shroomery trades too and need a lot of stuff to meet demand.
