Can't win a Trich
« on: February 04, 2022, 08:33:00 AM »

After successfully germinating a nice batch of Trichocereus seeds but mostly failing to get them past the incubator stage, i've joined thinking that this may be a good place to learn and hopefully be more successful in the future.

Welcome to STS,

Growing cacti from seed is a great lesson in patience. Once germination has occurred fungus, diseases,  pests , light , humidity and medium. type need to be monitored and optimized to ensure success while growing cscri from seed.

Hopefully you have a few Cacti that have made it through that your still able to salvage   start up a grow log/user garden and  drop some more information and I'm sure someone will set you straight and get you on a happy path.

Welcome to Share the Seeds! Enjoy your stay.

what is your soil mix? trichocereus are quite easy after 1-2 months I always remove humidity dome before any mold issues arrive but many people leave it much longer.

As long as you are giving them very bright light and soil is moist and not wet they will grow.

Thanks for the responses.  Fortunately I have a great specialist cacti nursery not too far away that sell a good range of Ceres and Trichocereus so I do have a few growing, but more fun to raise them from scratch.  I used a commercial cacti mix and treated the soil with a fungicide first.  Had good germination and kept them in small pots in a clear plastic tub to maintain humidity but the problems started when i realised I was squirting the tiny little seedlings too hard with my spray bottle and most of them fell over and died or were squirted clean out of the soil.  At least it should be an easy issue to rectify.  I thought they had all perished and put the pots on a ledge and one solitary seedling appears to have survived.  Other growing projects underway - acacias, morning glory, fruit, bush tucker, herbs so plenty to keep the interest up.
