Papaya Seeds cleaning/storage questions
« on: February 18, 2019, 01:12:54 AM »

A local swath of papayas is a matter of weeks away from bearing ripe fruit, and I am considering doing a giveaway of papaya seed once they do, the seed of course being sourced right from the fruit. I have no clue how to properly clean/dry and store papaya seeds (after harvesting from the fruit) in a manner which will produce the highest possible germination rate and the longest shelf life, and would appreciate it if anyone here may advise me on the matter.

You can dispose your seed on a sieve and rince them with fresh water, then dry them with cloth, air. it seem to float on the surface of water when dry.

Some have let fresh seed (from fruit) in forest for 4 year to keep them, then planted after.
Some do heat bath then boil.

You may find this document interesting but in French : http://horizon.documentation.ird.fr/exl-doc/pleins_textes/pleins_textes_5/b_fdi_01/010009379.pdf
It's OCRized sogoogle trad seems to work a bit.

hope you find something of interest

I saved a bunch of seeds from a fruit last summer
They have a jelly-like skin layer that should be removed before planting
I cleaned mine for the most part
I was a lot of seeds, so I didn’t individually inspect each or anything

I let the seeds soak in water for months,
For got about them a few times,
Water would smell funky anerobic,
Would rinse them and change the water and forget about them again
Eventually I got around to planting,
Nearly all sprouted.

So deff good for months if kept moist
Idk if they are the same once dried

If you wash the seeds and rinse them with hydrogen peroxide you can put them in a bag of moss and send them fresh.

Should I use a 3% solution of peroxide to wash them or a diluted solution of it? Should I remove/scrape the jelly like outer layer before they're washed with peroxide?

Definitely remove the jelly, 3% should be fine just rinse them again maybe.
