Greetings From Western NC!
« on: October 28, 2018, 06:52:25 PM »

I joined this site in hopes of getting involved in this wonderful world of ethnobotanical gardens. I was referred by a member of another site that I frequent. My current hobbies include music (fiddle, guitar, I occasionally mess around with flutes and didgeridoos), traditional archery (long bow and recurve), writing, mushroom cultivation, and I’m getting into craft beer brewing as well as an apprenticeship.

But more about why I’m joining, I’m interested in several plants and looking for other varieties to become interested in. I’m also really interested in bonsai. The plants in particular are mescaline containing cacti, bamboo, bonsai as stated and tobacco as I’m also a pipe smoker. Just really looking to learn the ins and outs of various plants. I like the longer lived plants admittedly. So basically come to look for recommendations on other plants I could grow around the house and where I can find seeds!

Thanks for reading guys! I’m off to work!

Welcome aboard Grey6Bard!

There are a number of STS members from your area so you are in good company. I will leave it to them to make themselves known however.

Looking forward to having you here.  :)

Thanks guys for the welcome!

And yes I have seen some bamboo, my uncle has quite a bit of it actually!
He doesn’t know how it originally set in but he’s kept it, he likes it enough.

Awesome to know we have so many members scattered in the area! I live near the tri state area, I wish I had some good pics to share but I’m not much of a photographer...

Actually I took this one recently!

Tri state area? In NC, or you’re Western NY?

What's that glowing green orb in the grass in the bottom picture? Should we call the Ancient Aliens show?

If you're asking about the last of Frogs' pics the green orb is a "flare" or the sun bouncing off one of the many lenses inside a camera lens.

Very common. But you normally see more of them in a pic as the sun normally bounces off all the lenses in a zoom lens but in this one the angle of the sun relative to the lens only permitted one flare. Or it was a very simple lens or possibly even a phone camera which has very few pieces of glass.

Exciting stuff, eh?

There is supposedly a giant spaceship under Black Mtn in WNC. Weird brown lights over Morganton as well.

I’m another WNC person...

Welcome.  Looks like you are very interesting person with a lot of cool hobbies.  I live in CT, my fiance is Cherokee so we plan on coming down to the Reservation next spring.  We have also come to NC and SC on vacations especially to look and photograph snakes.  I grew up with a fear of snakes but a few years ago my son took an interest in herpetology and since then I have gained such a love and appreciation for the vital role snakes play within ecosystems.
I also want to visit Joe Hollis @ Mountain Gardens in NC this coming spring, he is very wise with plants especially eastern plants and Chinese Herbalism.  He has many great videos that i highly recommend.
I just harvested nicotiana rustica seeds that I'd be happy to share with you.

Toxicodendron knows Joe Hollis, I’m pretty sure. I’ve been meaning to go up there, but haven’t yet.

We should set up a field trip. I know him, and it has been too long since I’ve been out there to see him.
