Sick San Pedro!
« on: August 25, 2013, 10:15:49 PM »

I'm worried about my San Pedro, he's having wrinkly brown spots that. I'm not sure what's causing them over watering? under watering? I've attached some pictures.

That almost looks like a peruvianoid rather than a pachanoid. Hmm. Some kind of hybrid. Very long spines, bit poofy areoles and a big number of spines.  Very peruvianoid looking areoles.  Anyways..

How often do you water, and how much do you water when you do water?

It looks to me like sunburn or some kind of infection from over watering.

I water it about once every two weeksish or when he starts to lean over. My room mate was looking after it for about a month while  I was traveling and could have been doing it more.

It's only showing up on one side so it could very well be a sunburn, but it's not going red like other sunburn cacti I've seen.

i've had sunburnt cacti turn yellow and shrivel a little bit.  I think it's just sunburn. But lets see what other people's opinions are before making a final decision.

I agree...that definitely looks like sunburn to me. Don't ask me how I know.   :(

Don't worry, it's not fatal or even injurious...it is more of a cosmetic issue, really.  Mine have all done well despite my occasional ineptness.

Tbh, it kind of looks like an infection of some sort, however it is odd its only occuring on one side

The yellow spots have black dots inside, looks kinda sick to me

my guess would be infucktion as well..

the only sunburn i have ever witnessed was a purply/red discoloration, and not really any wilting to speak of...

water that infrequently doesn't seem like it would be enough for rot.

maybe dig down a bit in the pot's soil and see if it is poorly draining?

that would be my guess.

I've had sunburn that is yellow and shriveled like that several times.  And also i've had the purple sunburn.  It does also look like a bacterial infection though.  I would probably uproot it and check out the roots and see if there's mold on them or something.

That's just me though.  I would hate to see you do that and it's actually a sunburn instead.

Last summer one of my cacti looked similar to that, also only on one side. It was spreading and I was worried I was going to have to make a cutting to save it. I stopped watering it, put it in a slightly more shaded area, and left it alone for awhile. It stopped spreading then I slowly started giving it more light again. Now all that's left of it is a nasty scar about a foot from the top of the cactus. Hope this helps.
