Growing Date Palm tree in pot indoors
« on: June 08, 2016, 05:28:07 AM »

I want to grow one from seed,
As a new ornamental buddy sitting inside the living room.
In a big container.

- The question is, will it be fine without direct sunlight?

- Are there any especial requirements for germination?
(I tried the "moist paper towel inside zip-bag" but failed. The seeds fell prey to mold)

Scrub the seeds with a wire brush to remove all skin and sugary flesh, wash really well, soak overnight then scrub again.
Plant in a nice sandy soil you should get 70% strike after about a month, if mould doesn't get them and they were nice an clean.

Growing indoors depends on your light levels, hard to say with any certainty, but I have grown them on the balcony plenty of times.
Never seen them fruit, just planted in the bush near water holes after a year or so, or gave them to friends.

Sucks, but AU-OS trade isn't cost effective or reliable anymore. Aussie trade encouraged, especially for cactus, dragonfruit, and colour fruited columns.

Thank you buddy!
Good to hear from you again  :)

I am not after fruits either,
Just want it as an ornamental beauty.

How do they react to perlite? or gypsum?

Is it a good idea to spray the seeds with P.harmala tea OR commercial fungicides?

BTW,
Is it necessary to use the seeds just right after the fruit is eastern?
Or are they still viable a couple weeks after being removed from the fruit and dried completely?

I grow a bunch of different palms and would strongly recommend you go with Chamaedorea elegans as an indoor palm.
