Camellia sinensis germination
« on: March 05, 2015, 09:58:51 PM »

Hello Family!

I've found some old C. Sinensis seeds lost in a drawer, probably with 1 year old, and decided to create an method to germinate them.. this is how I've proceeded:

1- With the seed shell intact, pour boiled water over the tea plant seeds. Soak them for 24 hours, this will soften the outer hull.

2- Scrap the surface, gently with a nail file, try not to go to deep and damage the seed. (Pic 1)

3- Place the seeds on water at room temperature for 2 weeks. Remember to change the water daily. Discard any seeds that float on the surface since they are likely rotten or hollow.

4- Over the two weeks, the seeds will "wake", progressively the shell will open, slowly cracking from the scraped spot. (pics 2 ) The one's that not open are doomed to failure, discard those. It's okay if the shell comes completely out, sow them! (Pic 3)

5- Now they are ready to be sowed like any regular C. sinensis seeds:  temperature of germination  between 70 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit / 21 -24 °C Celsius; Keep the growing medium moderately moist. Allow the top 1/2 inch to dry out before adding more water to prevent rot and expect some signs of germination in one to two months.

Hope this helps someone somewhere.

Thanks for reading ;)
