African tree, Nauclea latifolia, contains tramadol
« on: October 12, 2013, 07:04:03 PM »

Tramadol, a drug formerly only thought to exist as a synthetic, has been found in nature!  Nauclea latifolia (Rubiaceae) contains it in concentrations of 1%+ :O

Not only that, but N. latifolia seems to have many more interesting properties, as an anti-malarial, a remedy for diabetes, an anticonvulsant, plus a host of virtues known to traditional practitioners.
Besides tramadol, N. latifolia looks to contain many more promising compounds that probably act synergistically.  A vendor's page mentioned rhyncophylline.

Being that Tramadol lowers the seizure threshold and there have been several cases of people having seizures when taking it, albeit when taking a high dose, I find it very interesting that the plant has anti-convulsion properties. May I ask which vendor you saw selling this plant? I'm very interested.

The leaf structure looks very similar to kratom and coffee. Any word on the legality of growing or possessing the rootbark?

Interesting. Did you know there is an orchid that contains oxycodone? Lol.

I ordered 200 seeds of that orchid. Plants like that need to be preserved.

Ipomoea batatas (sweet potatoe) is closely related to plants that do contain lysergamides. It wouldn't be a huge shocker if it turned out there was a wild potato that contained lysergamides.

It's actually not that hard to cultivate ergot on wheat. Wheat seeds are very cheap (I just bought 2 kinds; Egyptian and hard red winter) for like 3$ for each pack of 200-300 seeds. Ergot grows wild almost everywhere iirc. I found a crap ton growing in a field one day.

I discourage anyone from trying to extract anything from it. But as for growing it purely for the fun of it, go for it! :)

I'm not sure I can post a vendor directly on this subforum, but if you search for Nauclea latifolia on google, there's a vendor on the first page.

Very interesting about that orchid, especially since it's a circumpolar species.  I doubt the amount of oxycodone is of interest for consumption purposes, but it's always amazing to find plants with chemicals we thought only synthetic.  I'm honestly a little surprised we don't know of any plants that make potent lysergamides on the order of LSD or its analogs.  Then again, salvinorin A is a pretty potent compound.

What about a plant that could make something like carfentanil, active at 0.1–1.0 μg.  Maybe no plant is sinister enough  ;D

As long as it's live plants and/or seeds and not dried/prepared plant matter you can post a link of the vendor in the Seeds and Plant Suppliers subforum.

You could also post it in this thread too. I'm pretty sure that's fine.

I typed that in google and only found a source for the actual plant matter. Just to clarify, I was asking if you knew any source for the seeds.  ;)

Also looking for a source for the seeds. Sunshine Seeds shows "out of stock".

Thanks!

Found it! "Nursery Live" in India. I emailed them to find out if they can ship to the U.S.

I heared the bad news that the Nauclea latifolia tested did not produce the Tramadol itself, but was contaminated with Tramadol dispersion from animals. Apparently Tramadol is widely used on livestock in parts of Cameroon.

Seems quite sketchy that only one article, published almost a decade ago by academics from obscure universities, makes this finding...  ::)
