Greetings from coAsTal
« on: December 15, 2019, 05:35:17 PM »

Hello friends--

I've been active on the Shroomery and the Nexus for many years, so there are many familiar names I see here.

I have a great respect for our plant teachers, and really enjoy growing (in my tiny indoor space.)

I have been working on growing Trichocereus cactus for the past year, and have spent far more money on it than my wife would like-- though she loves how much I love my hobby :)
One main reason I have joined is that I will have many trich seeds that are extra to me-- in my tight space I am typically only using a dozen or so seeds per bag, so as I plant them I will have many varieties to offer to my peers.

It's important to me that people grow these plants out to enjoy sustainably for the long term, not just to use them up as soon as they're big enough.
I understand that the culture here is oriented that way, so I want to be a part of this community.

My wife and I have plans over the next 2 or so years to buy a home with several acres of land so that we can expand our gardening to focus on sustainable food and trees, but I will dedicate a big place for my cactus so that I may grow them year round.

I look forward to becoming a participating member of the community once I can see the entire forum, and I appreciate the purpose of this place.

Right on digging those top two did you add the other plants yourself?

No, I've actually been experimenting a little with soil mixtures-- the top two were sown 9/9 from the same blend-- I'd heated the soil in the oven at 200 degrees for a couple of hours, intending to minimize the extra flora-- I suppose the layer on the pan was too thick to get the heat completely through, the scoop I took for the top one must have been pretty full of life after the baking, and you can see the result :)

I have switched to the coarse grit covering as you can see in the other two, in order to provide a barrier to the soil to inhibit too much overgrowth. It appears to help a lot. I don't mind the moss (and/or whatever else is present) as it's like a little community in there) but going forward I'll be working to eliminate too much competition of the limited resources in the medium.
