Germinating Phyllodium pulchellum
« on: November 27, 2018, 08:33:56 PM »

Hi there Seed comunity!

This is my first post, after reading and looking at all the beautiful pictures you have posted here.

I got my hands on fresh P. pulchellum seeds and was wondering if any of you had an idea on what the best technique is to germinate and take care of this wonderfull plant.
Using the search function I only found a couple of posts on the plant, but nothing about germinating the seeds.

I started the first try with the takeaway tek: first a layer of perlite for water draining, then a mix of cacti earth mixed with quarz sand and more perlite. This went wet on the microwave for 5 min, let it cool and then planted the seeds about 50mm under the earth. Now its being incubated with low light and about 24°C

Maybe someone here has good advice :)

Thanks

What size are the seeds? If they are small (seems to me Desmodium seeds run small right?) I wouldn't plant them that deep. Maybe 5 mm.  At 50 mm they're likely to run out of energy before they even reach the surface.

Yes,
the seeds are quite small. I couldn´t really find out if they need any kind of cold treatment or special conditions to germinate. All I know is that the plant originally grows in Thailand and the seeds are fresh :)
My best guess is, they are dark germinators. Maybe there is someone here that has succseded with this beautiful plant indoors.

Thanks for the tip Bach!

Yeah they grow in India and Thailand right? Pretty tropical places. I wouldn't think they need cold stratification or anything; those places don't get that cold.

Perhaps some light scarification between two sheets of sandpaper and then a hot water soak.

Or just plant, keep moist and pray. Who knows?

Best of luck and post questions as you have them. Let us know how it goes. This is a most interesting species and one that needs to get circulated amongst our little community.

There is indeed an update!

These little guys take their time.. Four of them made it through germination and they are developing their first pair of true leaf. I'll make some pics and post!

ShPy hasn't been active in over three years, so I can't imagine he'll update us any time soon.
