Some basic issues
« on: March 23, 2016, 06:07:02 AM »

So right now composting isn't an option, i have slight pest problems with no organic pesticides, i don't have any organic fertilizer (just the chemical blue stuff), and the only access to soil i have is the local dollar general store.

I was wondering if anyone had some good suppliers of organic pesticides, organic fertilizer, and possibly better soil.

Anyone have some tips on pest control, fertilizer, and what's in my soil/how to figure that out?

Also with the pests i think it's some kind of nat fly or something. It doesn't seem to have done any major damage or anything but still would like to get rid of them

I don't use organic fertilizers and have decent results.
For soil, maybe walking around your neighbours' backyards and asking nicely for a bucket or two will work. While at it, ask how they fertilize their yards, that will give you an idea. I presume that a car trip to the nearest wilderness is not possible? Maybe ask a friend?
There are a number of "safe" pesticide recipes on the net (tobacco infusions, oil emulsions, etc.) They tend to suffer from that very same problem - they're safe to the pests as well. Neem oil and its isolated main component, azadirachtin, while expensive over here is very effective. Anyway, you may try sticky traps or maybe a couple of Pinguicula plants with the gnats.

Alrighty, thanks :) will Nicotiana Rustica work for the tobacco infusion? i have it growing everywhere in the front yard and i could probably get soil anywhere since i live in the woods but i need to find a place where i won't harm any tree's roots.

since you live in the woods you have access to fantastic humus, grab the first few layers of leaves and forest floor, throw it in with some grass clippings and BOOM compost...

Really the humus from the forest floor is way better than carefully turned piles and yuppie tumblers, the difference is these people don't have access to a forest

seriously dude its all there just put em together...

I'll second this.
Don't worry what you will harm by collecting some humus, it will all grow back.
