An Observation: cacti spines and plant awareness

I have noticed that cacti can direct spine growth. Usually the spines would grow symmetrically from the ariole. When they encounter another object the spines have the ability to lay flat or veer out of the way. As a result, they never puncture themselves. Even neighboring cacti are spared the lance. Has anyone else who has encountered this? And are there cacti that just don't get along?

I've noticed this with new pups. The new pups will arc out far enough that they will not be punctured by existing spines on the main body. Even with very entangled crested cacti they tend to grow in a manner that they are aware of the neighboring spines.

I think my Pachanois are way more aggressive than that. Had a few branching, new pups piercing each other like Voodoo dolls.
Also got 3 Terscheckiis grown close together, and although they are much spinier, not a single piercing between them happened.
I've been growing them for years, but these cacti will always be super weird to me.
