Wood Ash as a Soil Additive
« on: February 17, 2016, 09:07:50 PM »

I was emptying the ash from my wood stove today, and wondered if it might be a good thing to add to my soil mix. I usually just scatter it around the yard and around bushes, and have never noticed any adverse effects.

I mix it in with green waste and roadkill, helps to keep the smell down, and speeds up the decomp in this fella>>>

I also use it to dust aphids. Ants hate ash, no ants, no aphids.
I also just dump a heaped handful on plants that are getting hammered by hoppers and I don't have time to deal with. After a couple days I wash/water the plants really well and spray or move or deal with properly, works great as a stop gap when I'm lazy or busy or its getting dark.
I keep a few buckets of sieved ash in the shed for this reason.

Sucks, but AU-OS trade isn't cost effective or reliable anymore. Aussie trade encouraged, especially for cactus, dragonfruit, and colour fruited columns.

What a great idea. I think I'll save some and dust all of my plants when I bring them outside. Maybe it will help with the spider mites that have moved in.
