Nicotiana rustica Seed Colour

It’s getting toward the end of the season here and I’m collecting N. rustica seed. Some seeds collected so far are a mid-brown colour, rather than black. Can brown seeds be viable? Are they immature or is there variance in colour? Most are black.

I look at an image from U.S. National Seed Herbarium…

The brown ones I have here are a little darker than that.

Brown ones can be viable.
Do a germination test on some brown ones to see if thats the case for yours.

 I can tell you I have problems with bud worms and droppings

The worm droppings are larger then seeds untill they dry out and crumble, then they look just like seeds

 I throw out any pod with a hole in it, just to be safe ,But I always miss a few,  and if possible look at the seeds under 30x and you can tell the difference. The 30x is also helpfull in my climate as many seeds tends to come out the pods with mold issiues not visible to the eye (at least not my eyes)
