Need ID on trichocereus species
« on: May 11, 2015, 11:53:04 PM »

today I went to Home Depot and found amongst their cacti three trichocereus cacti. They are all the same type of trichocereus cacti, but the label does not give any other info. I was hoping someone here may know what it is.

I'm thinking T. grandiflorus for a couple reasons:

1) they're very common as hardware-store cacti
2) the spines look fairly similar

But it'd be good to hear from others because I'm not quite sure.

I was thinking that, tershekii, or Trichocereus purpureopilosus

I would say T. purpureopilosus or a T. grandiflorus hybrid. Most likely a T. grandiflorus hybrid.  The spines and shape are just a bit off for purpureopilosus, but both of those species are very comonly found at hardware stores.  More so grandiflorus hybrids.

Ok. I wasn't too interested in those trichocereus cacti, but all the label said was trichocereus sp. So I jumped on them hoping they were some of interest. They were only like 4 bucks each so it was a decent deal and now I have some more friends for inside to make my house greener  ;D

First one looks like terscheckii to me. 2 and 3 I would call peruvianus or Cuzcoensis.

Question: How much organic material is in them pots?

I did the same a while ago, I have a grandi that looks the same as the other one that was simply sold as either a grandi hybrid or just a tricho hybrid.

OP those are definitely T. grandiflorus, and most likely hybrids.  Good news is they tend to flower more easily and at a much smaller size than other trichs, though those are probably still too small to flower. Also they should have colored flowers.

In clay pot is a terscheckii, my doubt is about the medium size plastic pot. Thanks

Question: How much organic material is in them pots?

They are different mixes...some are 1oo% organic material.

100% organic is marginally ok for trichs, conditional you let the mix dry out completely between waterings.

  Rather than start another thread,

Does anyone have a idea what this may be,  It was started as seed labeled Trichocereus peruvianus bought from a e-bay vendor.

Think it will work as graphting stock for true Trichocereus's ?  It needs to be cut and rerooted anyway as the base is so thin.
