Most Desired Plant?
« on: May 28, 2015, 12:58:03 AM »

One of my favorite things about this hobby is finding new plants to cultivate, especially if they are rare or endangered. What do you consider the Holy Grail of plants? What do you want to grow the most?

Mine used to be Hoodia gordonii, but now that it's in the collection I am looking for a new gem :)

Silene stenophylla

"In February 2012, a team of scientists from the Institute of Cell Biophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences announced they had successfully regenerated specimens from fruit that had been frozen for 31,800 (±300) years according to radiocarbon dating.[8][14] The accomplishment surpasses the previous record for the oldest plant material brought back to life, of 2000 years set by Judean date palm seeds."

Right now I'm on kind of a fruit-growing phase. I've been planting apple trees, blueberries, strawberries, etc...so they've taken over my interest for now.

If there's one plant that I could have, it'd be Archaefructus liaoningensis

"Archaefructus liaoningensis" has actually been extinct for several million years; its origin lies in the Cretaceous Period. Angiosperm fossils were found in China that are believed to be about 125 million years old, making it the world's earliest known flowering plant."

I want the one from the movie predators though. Not the real one. haha

Usually what attracts me to plants is a combination of usefulness, psycho-activity, edibility, aesthetic quality, poison or lack thereof, hardiness, or some other interesting, super unique quality.

Yeah, Silene stenophylla, I remember putting it in my wishlist, just in case.

More awesome stuff:
Dendrophyllax Lindendii - an orchid lacking chlorophyll and obviously leaves.
Cistanche Phelypaea - like all broomrape plants, parasitic (no leaves either :) )
Meconopsis Latifolia - I guess it would compliment my M Aculeata, if I had one id even build an alpine house for it.

Acacia phlebophylla -- Rare, endangered, incredibly beautiful and so far it seems fairly difficult to grow.

Cannabis Sativa and Peyote I think are my most desired :)
The avatar is a painting that was gifted to my dad a long time ago by a famous native painter, its called the "Peyote Chief" it means a lot to me even before I knew what it did. My dad said it was a sacred cactus and left it at that when i was young.

The unfortunate war on cannabis makes me unable to have this plant :(

Also, I guess i could throw Caapi, Psychotria and Mimosa Hostillis in there, Mimosa is one of my favorite plants, it is quite majestic and seems intelligent to me, obviously caapi is also a sentient one :)

And ofc my all time favorite trich The Matucana Peruvian Torch

EDIT: Did some research turns out this native american in the painting is the founder of the Native American Church Quanah Parker

Offtopic but amazing to me, as Peyote is very near and dear to my heart because of that portrait of him.

Probably Iboga, followed by Tephrocactus alexanderi var. geometricus .

Wow, I'm getting some great ideas for my wish list! I really like the idea of germinating extinct seeds

If anyone knows where to source a Diplopterys cabrerana cutting let me know! I'm willing to take a little risk and import one, clone it, send it out etc. I'm in contact with a few peruvians about it now, and am just waiting to hear back. Wish kiwi had this available!
