Hi all,

This post will by no means be specific, just a rough outline of things to start researching. ;)

If you're interested in the log method of cultivating edible and medicinal mushrooms, winter into early spring is the time to start mapping out species of trees. Talk to local fire wood suppliers and see if they can provide "fresh" logs. Otherwise, Stamets is a big supporter of following natural disasters and helping with "removal" of downed trees.

The logs need to be:
*"fresh", inoculated with spawn within 2 weeks to about a month after being cut.
* 4"-10" in diameter and about 40" long
* deciduous hardwood is typically best for most edibles (oak for shiitake)
* reishi do well on some "softer" woods
* kept off the ground once cut
* kept at about 40-60% water content
* if inoculated in winter, kept out of deep freezing temps, warmer the better. (Shed, inside, ect.)

This is something I have been interested in for quite some time. I wouldn't be able to start this year even though fresh oak is available to me. I'm gonna be watching this though for future reference as you guys progress.
