kinds of fertilizers for Acacias?
« on: October 09, 2013, 02:59:16 PM »

Hi,

A couple of my baby acacias (4 weeks) are starting to turn a little yellow. I added the recommended amount of a 10-4-4 feet to water and have used that twice with no improvement.

Any recommendations for fertilizers? Or another course of action?

In general, what kinds of fertilizers are good for acacias?

Thank you,
Hcc

If you're seeing yellows it could be a nutrient lock out, or lack of nitrogen. Everyone two weeks i give my mimosas a nitrogen feeding. Not sure if the same applies for acacia.

I fed my young Acacias 100ppm of 15-5-15 Cal Mag as needed (sub irrigated).  Once I transplanted into larger containers, I've just used a 13-13-13 Osmocote slow release fertilizer.  They seem to be happy with that.

It seems to me that they enjoy a substrate pH on the higher end compared to most other plants, but I'm not positive.  The water I'm using is 7.8 pH, with a 2.2 me/S alkalinity, and I don't have to correct anything for them to keep growing...  My substrate pH is just under 7.0.

Thank you onion!

I was speculating it may be a calcium deficiency. I'm no expert though.

Hmm well acacias and mimosa are both memebers of the leguminosae family, which means they can have specific bacteria that can colonize their roots and take atmosphereic nitrogen and give it to the plants in exchange for plant foods.

Maybe introduce more of specific bacteria? Especially if potted
