Ive been growing them for years. They grow fast especially with good rich soil and lots of water, they are waterhogs. Ive been growing nice plants indoors for about 3 years now. Plan on starting a cutting outside. Good luck with your Caleas! :)

the spear leaved caleaz were flowering right before the big freeze a while ago..

 >:(

they are starting to grow back now, and ive found a great new use for them :D

the dried woody stems can very easily be hollowed out with any skinny tool,
i used a piece of metal that came off a street sweeper,  but whatever works.
inside the stems are naturally hollow, and contains papery stuff like bamboo.

Another good use is as a drawing/writing charcole after it's been set on fire..
