[lighting question] "Desert 50 UVB" bulb for plants?
« on: January 06, 2015, 07:46:25 PM »

Hi All,

In one of my many thrift store adventures, I found a fixture/bulb that's called "Desert 50 UVB T8" by Zilla.
http://www.amazon.com/Zilla-11840-18-Inch-Fluorescent-15-Watt/dp/B000QFROMQ

I also found a Zilla "Tropical 25 T8" bulb:
http://www.amazon.com/Zilla-11988-18-Inch-Tropical-Fluorescent/dp/B000YIWNZI/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1420570128&sr=1-1&keywords=tropical+25+uvb

Do these have any application for plants? or just Lizards?

Thanks,
Hcc

Hi,
Ive also wondered this. The CFL's the sell specifically for reptiles can b pretty spendy. Ill drop it for my pets, and i dont know if the lights are any diff from standard cfls, but id rather just spend the $$s and teat my pets than have them live all unhealthily, but i dont have many animal pets either, so that investments small.
For plants, well id need several bulbs, and ive never heard anyone suggesting them. T5's all day is what i hear. But, to be honest, i do think those reptile bulbs do let off a slightly different spectrum than normal bulbs. the way the light bounces off the glass, or melds with the uv light... call me crazy, but i swear i see like rainbow tracers/ halos and other visual effects, just by how the light reflects around. idk, but my grow bulbs dont do that...
What could be different about these reptile bulbs??
