Zone 6a Newbie...
« on: January 12, 2019, 01:52:54 AM »

Last year I go into composting, and this year plan on doing some experimental gardening.

The plants I'm mainly interested in are sweet peppers, watermelon, and cherry tomatoes.  I plan on planting one or two of a variety of breeds and see which tolerates my climate, tastes good, and produces well for me.

I've developed 'micro raised beds', which I made out of free 6 gallon plastic oil jugs.  One jug makes two beds.  They worked out pretty well last year, and the price was right [ got from a local restaurant ].

These let me CONCENTRATE my compost directly on the plant roots.  Newspaper around the plant base keeps water from evaporating and weeds from sprouting.  The raised bed itself allows for good drainage.  The square shape allows me to mow easily around it.  They measure 8"x8"x6", or thereabout.
