My Antonio Bridgessi cutting is dying is it rot or lack of water?

That is rot  . I would cut the tip off and try to save it.

I decided to do an areola graft

Looks like it had too much water and is rotting, but it could be rotting for other reasons. It looks like a gonner to me. Areoles have to be pretty hydrated and healthy to take via graft, but it's possible.  Good luck!

If that's the bridgesii cutting I sent you, I don't think it had roots. You want to keep unrooted cuttings nearly bone-dry if possible.
If it did have roots, they were probably very small. When the roots are small, they only need a very small amount of water and fast draining soil. The soil looks very damp, as though it's not draining.

I put it in bone-dry soil, I had just watered it after discovering the rot. I decided to water it in the hopes that it would rehydrate. Sadly, neither of my attempts to rescue it panned out I'm really bummed, that cutting had such promise. Your other cuttings rooted spectacularly, however. Thank you for helping me out, Happy. I'll probably buy a thicker cutting off one of the vendors recommended on here.
