what kind of fruit tree is this?
« on: September 24, 2014, 03:14:30 AM »

so i walk by this tree everyday to work, at first i thought it was a peach, but when i went to check it out up close i noticed its maybe something else...?  the fruits look like apples, but are almost as soft as a peach.  and with the way the house is set up, unless i catch the owners in the front yard, im yet to even see a door i could knock on to even ask.

thanks

They just look like yellow apples to me.  Did you feel any of the fruits. Were they hard?

Might be a yellow variation of a persimmon?

I don't know where you live, but I'm guessing it's a canistel (Pouteria campechiana).  :)

I think they look more like canistel than persimmon, but I don't know what grows where and all that stuff.  The pointed bottom part is very unique and I didn't notice it when I first saw it.

Snag a fruit and get some seeds!

Whatever it is due to the cooler environment the seeds probably would need stratified.

I think that's the genus for persimmon in English. Could be wrong.

caqui = persimmon = diospyros kaki (and others species)

so i met the lady today on my way to work.  almost was late, sweet old lady, but we started talking about gardening and  ::)

anywho, the tree is an asian persimmon cultivar (forget the name), two scions grafted to an american persimmon for a root stock (else it will get to cold here).  no dice on the seeds, this variety produces large, seedless fruits.  she did say she would start me a seedling for a stock and hook me up with some graftlings.
