Hi
« on: August 30, 2015, 04:42:12 AM »

It's time for me to say hello. But first, I want express gratitude to those who have made this resource exchange available and to all those members that contribute to the knowledge base of STS.  Thank you!

I've been registered for almost a year and I've enjoyed reading and absorbing some excellent discussion on the STS site.  I've picked-up quite a few bits of valuable information too.  However, this is my first post.

I've been gardening for several years with flower bulbs that naturalize in my planting zone.  So I am familiar with the care-taking involved with growing plants.  However, my immediate growing interest now lies with Psychotria Viridis.

I started growing Alba about four years ago thinking that I was growing Viridis.  Three years ago I obtained my first true Viridis leaves -- two beautiful leaves which I promptly killed even though I followed all of the rooting instructions.

I tried again 2 years ago using rain water in place of the highly alkaline tap water I was using, two new leaves and found success with one of them.  The result, pictured below is now about 9 inches tall to the top of the tallest stipule.

Last year I was able to obtain leaves from 5 additional sources so now I have plants in various stages of growth all less than 2 years old.  The plants are very similar but I am starting to notice differences in the appearance and growth habits of the plants.  I'm starting to focus on cultivars now and would like to find out which cultivars I have and which I don't have with the goal of filling the gaps.

That's it for now.  Happy to be here!

Welcome! Nice plant. What causes the dimpling on the leaves?

Thanks!  Simple answer -- too dry.  The leaves emerge from the stipule in pairs then separate.  Moisture aids in te separation and when it is too dry they tend to stick together.   It helps to mist them if it hasn't rained in awhile.

I have a sprinkler set on timer to try to avoid this but the sprinkler broke.  Fixed it this weekend.

I'm not entirely sure but it's my best guess for now.  I'll be asking the same question if dryness isn't the answer.   I am still learning too!   :)
