Songs and dances to Jurema (Mimosa)
« on: April 29, 2014, 02:18:13 PM »

Many STS people cultivate Mimosa tenuifolia and other Mimosa.
So I decided to post a link to Kariri-Xocó music.
Kariri-Xocó is a Brazilian Indian group dedicated to Jurema (Mimosa spp). They have Jurema Cerimony called Ouricuri (same name of a palm tree) and there is a lot of songs dedicated to Jurema.

Jurema may refer to the plant Mimosa and the associated culture, and can refer to an entity of Umbanda (mixture of religions of African origin with Christianity). The song you posted references to the entity of Umbanda. Generally the songs of Umbanda are called Ponto. There is also the Catimbó, which mixes African religions with elements of native indigenous culture.
I like Pontos de Jurema.
Ex:
Jurema tua folha cura
Jurema tua flecha mata
Quem é filho da Jurema
Nunca se perde na mata.

(Bizarre translation)

Jurema your leaves cure
Jurema your arrow kill
Who is Jurema son
Never get lost in the forest
