Title: Panic grass
Post by: MadPlanter on December 15, 2021, 04:46:39 PM
Just stopping in real quick because I heard some interesting info from a trusted source. I know I have messages to get back too and I'll get to whomever soon. Anyways to add some info here some of you may find interesting.

Recently heard a common grass here in Florida calked "Panic grass" often has ergot growing on its seed heads. Should be able to tell which seeds are effected as they will be larger and more swollen than non infected seed heads. Figured some of you might find that interesting for various projects. Otherwise do with that info what one will. Maybe someone can find a link to info confirming this though I trust my source whose a well learned botanical expert and popular plant teacher here in Florida.

Very commonly grown here for cattle and in Florida the warm humid climate would make it pretty abundant “issue” there i would assume

Very interesting find MP!

perhaps it can be " Achnatherum robustum "  ( Stipa robusta, also Stipa vaseyi subsp. robusta) commonly known as sleepy grass.
