Title: Does Diplopterys Cabrerana produce viable leaf cuttings?
Post by: roamspirit on August 06, 2021, 12:17:06 AM
Hi STS,

I recently received a D. Cabrerana leaf cutting from a friend on reddit.  However, I have had it for a little over a month now and I have seen no signs of new growth, and the single leaf seems to be developing a dark spot.  If D. Cabrerana does produce viable leaf cuttings, is there anything I can do to get it to produce new growth and/or increase its chances of survival? I have it 45cm under a grow light at 80% humidity and 38C.

When I did a leaf cutting it rooted however never produced a sprout... the node probably needs to be present for it to propagate.

Unlike Psychotria, Malpighaceae as a rule does not seem to have the biological machinery to clone that way. Woody stem cuttings are the only way that works that I am aware of.

i have plastic shoe-box full of diploptery leaves in soil,
maybe month 6, has lots of roots, but still no sprouts.
i've heard before they won't sprout from a leaf,
but it's worth a try, maybe it just takes forever.

What about applying some growth regulators like Cytokinins and Auxins for shoot induction...
Just wondering if it would help, soaking the rooted leaves in a Phytohormone solution?

I tried propagating caapi by leaf cutting years ago, and as mentioned above they made masses of roots and stayed green but without any shoots forming for six months or more till I lost interest and dumped the experiment in the compost.

Whether they would respond to the cytokines and such who knows, but it might be worth trying if someone were interested. Personally I'm not because it violates the KISS principle.

Thanks for sharing that info, Bach.

Probably you´re right, why do things in a cumbersome way, when propagation from seeds or stem cuttings is possible.
Provided you have seeds or can take stem cuttings.  :P
I tried several times to grow it from seeds, which were sold as D. cabrerana unfortunately without success  :-X
So still have no plant to take cuttings from.

My chali from bach is doing excellent as well. I may have some clones next year. Gotta pot up bigger first and let it grow. It took me 2 years to realize how much water these things can actually handle. They apparently love sitting in wet soil lol.

There is a reason they call it oco yagé. Oco means water.
