Cactus Degraft Rooting Tech

Hey guys. I wanted to share with you my sucessfull degraft (or normal cutting) rooting tech for globular cacti.

I start by filling a tupperware container without drainage with pumice fines.  Pumice fines are basically degraded pumice powder. I get my pumice fines and other pumice products from General Pumice Products (http://generalpumiceproducts.com).  I haven't tried this with other substrates but I imagine you can use sand or perlite. The fines really make it easy for nice fine roots to develop though so I would recommend using it.

Make sure to let the plant properly callus over any wounds before trying this.  Sometimes I will even leave on a small piece of the stock to root, but it will work without any stock as well.

Bury the bottom of the plant into the fines. Put a heat mat underneath the tupperware and let the plants moderate light.  Then this is the trick, drop a few (depending on the size of the tupperware) drops of water onto the pumice fines every day and let the heat mat evaporate the water off before putting more on.

Give it a few weeks/months and you should have some roots developing.  With the pumice fines the roots that pop out are very fine and have lots of fine hairs. Very healthy roots!!!  This works for Lophophora, Astrophytum, Ariocarpus, ect...
