Title: Sugarcane calus before rooting???
Post by: ONandONandON on May 05, 2017, 10:07:27 PM
Hello STS, i just got some black sugarcane in the mail.. (side note: looking for any other varieties)
i cut them in half and was wondering if it's alright to go ahead and plant, or let it callus over first?

you probably already planted it. but, i found this, not sure if it is exactly helpful, but looking at others responses it doesnt seem to make a difference. Looks like planting it sideways is probably the way to go.

If anyone else has experience, i am interested as well, looking into trying sugarcane next year.

Thanks! :) ended up planting the next day, a couple cut to short didn't grow, other three are growing..
i would recommend starting from seed in early spring, because seeds are much cheaper than cuttings.

I had a black sugarcane I got from Echo nursery. Hard to keep up with the water needs in a 3 gallon pot, so the largest cane snapped over sideways. I thought it was dead but then it started sending roots out from each node that was sideways. Yesterday I noticed new leaves coming from at least 4 nodes as well!
