So im interested in starting a small beekeeping operation and was wondering, what are the basics?

Have a Agway close to you by chance ? ?  They have beekeeping classes, I imagine they could be found at cornell and library as well

There's a LOT to it. If you have a more specific question I can answer it for you. :)

2 main types - Top bar and langstroth. Then there's bee types - italian, russian, etc.. All together you'll be looking at around 200$ absolute minimum to start off. I'd recommend spending at least 400$ and getting a decent kit and package of bees.

You could just go au natural and hollow out a log, buy a package, and install. You won't get honey this way without destroying the hives though. You could also try to lure a swarm into said hive. If you went this route it would cost you around 10$. haha

Wow, I didn't even think about there being more than one type of honey bee lol, what kinda space requirements to you generally need?
