Title: Exif data
Post by: New Wisdom on July 05, 2016, 09:00:34 AM
Exif data could show location and IP iof the picture taken.

Does this site automatically delete this? It seems to.

Thaks!

It appears that the forum software strips the majority of the EXIF data leaving only the basic file inormation. I say it "appears" because I could only check using the pics I have uploaded against their originals.

Since some data is transmitted I imagine the remainder could be recovered by someone skilled enough. The only way to be sure is to remove the EXIF data before uploading a photo. There are several different companies that make software to remove EXIF data, there are some freeware options as well. Or it could be removed from terminal.

Here's a link for a site to help members remove exif data if they choose.

The easiest way for me to do this especially for bulk images is to select all the photos then right click and select properties. Then press details, 'remove properties...', and choose second option and select all then ok. When on a phone or something uploading is easier at times although there are programs that remove it.

In Linux, I have  perl-image-exiftool installed.

for i in *.jpg; do echo "Processing $i"; exiftool -all= "$i"; done

All jpgs in that dir will be "cleansed". Since exiftool supports raw files, I suppose it would also work for png and other formats.

The above would work on a Mac with exiftools or software with equal functionality. For Windows, there is an Exiftool binary here: http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/

Download and install. You should be able to whip up a little batch script to do the same thing. I'd guess the file flags will be the same.

You should be able to make life easy and just never record GPS data when taking pictures. You can verify this functionality using exiftool; I believe it allows you to also view the contents, depending on what arguments you pass it.

 i love the idea,

but I dont trust it, I honestly believe some federal scum agency sets up these things to make people feel safe but they could still acess the info.

think of all the backhanded sneaky stuff they do,  like how the infiltrated the tor network

I have a early digital camera that is not capital of GPS  ( and I still dont trust it)

And theirs still the issue that our accounts trace back to a IP address (I think thats what it's called atleast)

Exif data is simply the Metadata that you hear people talk about.
Helpful article for those who don't know about it:

Even if someone could prove without a dought that that info is completely removed and 100% unable to be retrieved, I dont know enough about computers to be able to tell if it's true or not.

So for me it's basic opsec not paranoia

AFAIR STS automatically strips all exif.

EIRN: The risk you run is that someone, likely authorities, tie your account and your pictures to a certain location or even to you as a person. So if you took a picture of a large plantation of questionable crop and it does contain EXIF (It doesnt on STS, just like STS doesnt have you guys IPs) then law enforcement could have a look at it. In the worst case: They have the exact location of your plantation and the serial number of the camera you used, if they find that camera in your home you look pretty guilty. But luckily there is no illict activity on STS, so this all is more a "general privacy" discussion.

thanks for the  tips

security isn't paranoia

paranoia is a result of a lack of security

Doesn't this count as a dead thread already?

Anyway, I'm thankful you posted a reply here, ShareForFirst, since I already wondered how STS handles such info, and your post popped up on my 'new since last visit'.

Not that I plan to post anything illegal, and I'm giving up a fair bit of personal info already, but privacy is still really nice.
