Title: spiders pros and cons
Post by: Cannettuce on June 27, 2013, 03:59:00 AM
I was curios, but does anyone else like or dislike spiders in their garden? I have always used several breeds of them to take care of pests, but i like outside opinions

I love spiders, caretakers of the world. If you watch them closely they will let you know about plant pests before the plants do, i just wish they would eat more ants.

If I saw a spider on my plants I would leave him be. They eat bugs. Bugs=bad

I love the Idea, but my plants are in my home.. makes it kind of hard for me. I guess it all comes down to what kind of spider.
Outside gardens, let them run wild. Just no jumpers. They seem to hop on me and take a trip to wherever I go..

I love em and encourage them in my greenhouse ,they're all named Shelob of course. I wouldn't want them inside the house though=)

Though this year I had a bunch of praying mantis babies in there  which was awesome for the same reason that I like like the spiders.. but then the spiders were catching and eating them.. I was very torn that my favorite insects were eating each other. *Sigh* Oh well, that's life I guess!

But the good news is that a bunch of the babies have grown up and are still living in there and are no longer snack-size for the spiders so now I have the best of both worlds....for now. Unfortunately neither of them fancy ants it seems:(

I was using daddy long legs inside, they were the safest, but outside i let the camel spiders and lizards take care of pests, they both eat ALOT of ants, but still not enough, because once the camel spiders grow big enough, they eat the lizards lol

I would love some Praying Mantises and if they are in my house, I am sure they would stay stron eating ants, spiders, gnats, flies, roaches. it would be a good addative to my home lol.
Ive seen the camel spiders die by the work of one ant.

Whenever I see a spider in the house I catch it in a cup and put it in the garden.

One that hasn't been mentioned yet that I always like to see hanging around in the gardens is the ladybugs. Great little helpers those ones!

Lady bugs are fantastic but when you find them in the garden that usually means you have aphids. Love lady bugs, hate aphids.

My cabbage is growing late late, and it is full of aphids, i let them stay for now, because they are murdering my cabbage, but nothing else, maybe use cabbage as an anti aphid for your other plants?
