Title: Emergency grafting?

Hey y'all-

I just got several Trichocereus seedlings in the mail from HCC, along with some pereskopsis.

The seedlings were doing great but a rambunctious 5 year old snapped one of them in half, not entirely but pretty bad.

Should I just let it try to heal on it's own, or could I graft it to one of the pereskopsis before the pere is rooted? Like do the graft and then plant the pere?

Will the pere just root in water or does it need to be in soil?

Ant advice is appreciated.

Your graft will most likely fail if you graft to the pere before it's actively growing and established.  I root them in soil and start watering immediately (don't wait for roots, they like water.)

How tall/wide is the seedling? Does it have hard spines yet or are they soft still?

The seedling is about an inch tall, maybe 1 cm wide.

The spines are soft still.

There are a few areoles left below the break. Could I maybe just call this a cutting? Would either of them survive?

And on the Pereskopsis, no period of time in straight water like rooting Salvia? Plant it & water well is what I read. I have them just sitting in a glass of water...

I have rooted seedlings that were only 1cm before.  I didn't mean to, but the base rotted, it fell over, developed roots on the side on the ground, then pupped on the top and continued growing.  So you can probably root it if you try.  Just keep it dry for a little while while the wound is callousing over.

For sure.  Forgot to mention. If it's broken through the core of the seedling just separate the two. Root the top and plant the base again.

I accidentally broke this seedling in half over 3 weeks ago. I haven't stuck the un-rooted "cutting" soil to root yet and it's still fine.

Cool-

The more I look at it the more I think that the cactus might heal up on it's own. It looks more like the kid just squished it in the middle, but the vascular bundle is still intact so I just propped it up and am hoping for the best...
