Title: [STS] Seed Gallery
Post by: Mandrake on May 31, 2013, 04:41:35 PM
Hi all,

for reference and identification, STS has now available a new feature: The Seed Gallery (http://sharetheseeds.me/index.php/seeds).

There you can access a list of pages, classified by Genus, including good quality images of seeds, seed clusters, fruits and other relevant seed ID details of plant species with psychoactive and therapeutic properties, and related species in their respective families.

Please post in this thread if:
We'll keep here a list of the currently represented species, for quick forum reference. Contributions are essential for building a great reference gallery. Please share your seed pictures with us!

Here are some for the gallery.

I have germinated from all of these and I am 99.99% sure of their authenticity.

First picture: Trichocereus Bridgesii
Second Picture: Hyclocereus Undatus (Dragonfruit. It's not psychoactive, but it is a cool cactus that grows dragonfruit)
Third picture: Artemisia Absinthium (wormwood)
Fourth picture: Argyreia nervosa var. Hawaiian (HBWR)

This plant may be psychoactive, I am still working with it to see.  Supposedly one of it's relatives makes a sedating tea.

Much appreciated, Seed Collector!

I will add them to the gallery as soon as I can.

One hint regarding the magnification issue... when a good digital camera with macro lens is not at hand, you can easily fit the lens of any common compact digital camera to the viewer of a pocket microscope. The little cheap ones fitted with LEDs, commonly used for inspection of leaves, flowers or trichomes in gardening work, make a good combo with compact cameras. You can find in the gallery several "macro" pictures taken this way.

Thanks for the photos,

Mandrake

Big thank you to all for the contributions!

The Seed Gallery and the main index in this thread are now up to date. We have so far 37 genera represented, with 74 species/varieties. Not bad for starters :)

Some contributions are perhaps too blurry to be useful for an ID. I'm leaving these posted in this thread, if the original contributor has the chance to obtain sharper pictures, I will add them to the gallery right away.

With the STS Plant Gallery (http://sharetheseeds.me/forum/index.php?topic=339.0) and the STS Seed Gallery (http://sharetheseeds.me/index.php/seeds), we are well on our way to build one of the best photo reference guides around.

Great job, guys. Keep them coming!

All the best,

Mandrake

Hi

This is 2 pics i took of my newly bought Alicia Anisopetala (Black Ayahuasca) seeds.
I was thinking it might be something for the seed pic library.
I have put them in soil but nothing have come up yet.
But im told this one can take a while before they germinate.
It would be nice with some Alicia Anisopetala plants.

Acacia Burkittii (aka. Acacia Acuminata subsp. Burkittii)

The last one is of Rivea/Turbina Coryumbosa, I know there was one there but the one I am posting looks more like the Rivea that I've seen, it could just be the lighting of that photo though.

I would like to contribute, a rarety, Sassafras Tzumu. The chinese Sassafras tree is one of only two members to its family, together with the North American ones. Both produce the desired goodies that can be used in root beer  :-X

The seeds are close to perfectly round, have a very dark brown colour and a diameter of approximately 5mm. On the seeds a lengthwise enhancement, going around half the seed, can be found, its hard to see because of the seeds darkness. They require a full stratisfaction cycle to germinate.

Maybe someone can help to ID some seeds wich I believe to be a Phalaris I didnt sow yet... Stupid me forgot to label, I will attach them they are easily told from the seeds described above :D

I just arrived back from a nice walk and nearly finished with the clean up, and I harvested some Papaver Rhoeas, wich I have been targeting since long. Besides that I have collected some Matricaria chamomilla or German Camomile (I should remember planning on several baggies next time for those species that I didnt have in mind).

So here we go, first Papaver Rhoeas seeds come from seedpods that are about 20mm in length and 10 in width. They are released around the circumfence at the top. Each pod is to contain in between 200 and 5000 seeds wich are sown by wind and the corresponding movement if the pods. They are sowing 4 meters in radius on average. They need light to germinate, can stay dormant for a long time and tolerate poor conditions, drought and loamy soil. Each seed is bean shaped as for the human eye and about 0.5 mm in size, they appear black. All poppies are poisonous.

Secondly the Chamomile seeds are shaped like a predators tooth, with 2 mm in length 1 in diameter and a slight curvature. They are developed in the center of the flowers. They are similarly tolerant and prefer the same conditions as the poppys do - hence I found them in the same place ;) they make nice herbal tea with well known healing properties.

As usual both species are to be given away as long they last.

Not active but health benefits and pizza enhancing:

Ocimum basilicum, seeds are 2mm in length, 1 in diameter, they are always 4 in one flower, flowers per node seem to vary. To harvest simply collect a jar of flowers, let compeltely dry, hold shut and shake, seeds will collect at the bottom. Give the remainder back to nature there will be plenty of seeds that have not been extracted.

Up for giveaways as always :D

I will soon have a microscope to contribute better images.

Datura Stramonium

Bean shaped, 3mm long, 2 wide and 1mm in the remaining dimension.
On giveaway, as long as the building site stays as is the supply is close to unlimited.

Sambucus Nigra

Fresh from berry therefore moist and slimy in appearance. Up to 4 mm long 2 wide 1 high. Sadly I only have limited supply of those as for now, theese habe already been promised.

E. novogranatense

Out of my first first five berries to ripen two were eaten by birds before picked, one sprouted but quickly died off, and the newest two are well sprouted! Viability is a go!

Better news is that the E. novos are pushing out new sets of flowers and since the first set have been planted into larger containers with fresh soil. Hopefully they will set fruit heavy this time instead of just a few berries all cramped up in small pots!

CP and oriky are first in line for possible seeds. I'm hoping whatever seeds get produced this time will spread much farther than just the three members above! Fingers crossed people!

The E. coca is starting to flower too! Great year!

Hypericum Perforatum

Max. 1 mm in length, about .3 in diameter. Seeds too smell of St Johns

Aaaand here we go again, fairdinkumseeds might be delighted to see :D a single Dysphania Botrys seed peeking out of its enclosure after I cracked the thing with pliers and a syringe tip. Its .5 mm max and I see no point in showing it without magnification :D

I was told that this was from a Cohoba (yopo) tree.  the seed was taken right off of the tree...but all the pictures I find online are flat/dry seeds so I really can't tell.  The tree looks just like the pictures found online for Anandenanthera peregrina.

The seed has been germinating for 3 days wrapped in toilet paper and the little "sprout" can be seen coming out in the pictures.

I didn't take pictures of the tree or pods... but I will next time I'm in the area.  I know the pods start turning a redish color when drying.  I wasn't able to see the pods when they were fresh on the tree so I'm not sure of the entire process, but I'll document that in the future.

Searching online I found a nearly identical pod on Dmt Nexus wiki...however...the pod is under the Mimosa Hostilis Wiki.  Now I'm really confused.  I'll include the picture at the bottom.

*Note:  The picture at the bottom was found online an I'm not 100% sure that it's the same kind of tree that  I got my seed from.  It's just the closest in appearance.

I'll have to check next time I visit the tree.  Other pods were drying really fast and the seeds were already changing their shape...I took my seed from a fresh pod.  I'll take pictures of the tree, other pods and fallen seeds to compare.

Here's a picture of some. Not my photo.   Maybe those are a different variation or something. I think there were some round ones too that Odara was giving away.  Maybe he can chime in here.

I know that in the seed pod drawings that I've seen...they all appear round shape.  But all the seed drawings/pictures are flat.  I personally thought it was a fruit, but when I bit into it...I noticed the center was hard.  I removed a small piece of it's flesh and noticed it was a seed and not a fruit.  I would have gone today to take pictures but got some hbwr and needed to try those out ;)

Hello everyone,  I finally found out the name of the "cohoba" tree I found.

It's called:  Cojoba Arborea (L.) Britton & Rose
Common name:  frijolillo
Family:  Fabaceae
Synonyms:  Acacia Arborea, Mimosa Arborea

Info:

Cohoba and Yopo

Cohoba, a potent hallucinogen made of ground tree seeds of  cojóba tree (Cojoba arborea) , was the mind-altering substance of choice for Taino “behiques” (shamans). The powder was placed on a special carved pedestal and inhaled through a twin-nasal inhaler such as the Y-shaped pipe (also called Cohoba).

Yopo (Anadenanthera peregrina) is similar to cohoba and comes from upper Orinoco, Venezuela and adjacent Brazil. The seeds of these trees are roasted gently and then ground into a fine powder which is mixed with the ashes of certain leaves (alkaline substrate).

The top picture is of the leaves at night.  The close together and then open up during the day again :)

The pod is actually considered its fruit...and the black seeds are the ones the shamans used in their ceremonies.

Centella asiatica (gotu kola)

Most have germinated after 3-4 months. From a reputable medicinal plant supplier, and seedlings look to be the real deal.
