Title: Sideways pics?
Post by: Mrgreenthumm on August 04, 2014, 03:19:50 AM
I have uploaded some pics in both the plant and
seed galleries. I took all of them in an upright camera
position but some are posting sideways??? Any ideas
why or fixes appreciated.

Are you posting them directly from a phone?

That's why. I'm not sure how to stop that.  But I always edit my photos before hand on my computer and rotate them upright.   Maybe another phone browsing member can enlighten you on how to combat this.

I have an idea. Instead of taking the pictures on your phone upright take them so they are sideways on the phone.  Then maybe when they upload they will be upright.

(top of the phone pointing to your right)

I do but no internet svc at the moment. Relying on the good ole data! I did find a fix though. I'm using an IPhone and I just discovered if I crop my pics just a bit, in the edit function, they turn upright when posted. I've seen a few other pics turn out sideways too so maybe we can spread the word on this fix. Well at least for iPhone users.

I use "paint" on the computer to rotate if needed; this may not help in your circumstance. Glad you found a fix.

I am only acessing from my phone and found a method thats annoying but works:

1. post it
2. download the rotated pic
3. rotate it on your phone (usually they come with suficient aditing capacities if not get an app)
4. upload it to replace the pic posted in 1.

I'm pretty sure why this is happening is because of automatic EXIF Data stripping
EXIF data contains information like where the photograph was taken. This is useful to the camera for auto orientation. This is not useful to us, as it could potentially give away our locations.

It would appear that because a lot of vertical photos rotate UNLESS you strip the EXIF data yourself through a 3rd party editing program... or what BC said..

anyway my 2 cents.

Good to know, I was always worried my metadata would stick to my pics here and I really dont know what they show and what not, legal issues could arise. Stripping it automatically is great.
