Imo i think a top bar may be the best option to start out.

You dont have to buy so many hive pieces, and the cell size is slightly smaller, which prevents some pests like small hive beetle from getting a foot hold.

Also, its damn awesome to watch the bees build comb straight from the bars!! Just be sure not to tilt it when ya pick it up, or it may snap !!!!


Also, russian bees are known for being bees with good cleaning habits. So there a decent starter bee!!
