Kinda looked similar to caapi in such a way. Was wondering if it was maybe. Flowers red I'm told but I haven't seen it happen. Just noticed it in the neighbors yard a week or two ago. Will add more pics soon.

That looks identical to caapi.
Opposite leafs, vein shape, leaf shape, leaf edge....all looks identical.

That's only the part of the vine hanging over the fence. On the other side its huge!

The vein even stops before the edge of the leaf, just like caapi.
I'd give it a 95% chance that you got a big caapi vine right there. :)
Nice find bro.

I hope so but I'd like to be dead certain. Is there a place I could send a piece of vine to? At the nexus they test for presence if stuff...maybe the constituency of the stuff can give an id? Or a real herbarium or botany place. There are several similar to caapi vines around town here I've seen at a distance. This one however is most like a true caapi. I feel it possible that it isn't at all though. I know there has to be some randomly around somewhere but that close to me just seems impossible.

You could do a reagent test for harmala alkaloids.
-
If you make an extract and put it under a black light it should glow. That's all I found out on how to test for it. I looked for how to reagent test for it but couldn't find anything. You could always send it off to a lab but that's really expensive.

I guess I could boil it up and see if it glows in any way. All I know is that it flowers a clustered red flower bunch but I've not yet seen it myself. Its across the street from me next door to my cousins house. The lady there is no stranger to gardening so??? She and her husband are fairly old. Their kids being in their 40s. They used to have an impressive garden but aren't super active in it now. I'm gonna root a cutting or two just for the hell of it...nice looking flowering vine either way right. Could probably take many cuttings...if anyone wants a piece of mystery vine.

Have you researched to see if there are any banisteriopsis species native to your area?
-
No I haven't but I guess its possible. There are similar looking vines all over. Ones called a bleeding heart vine and is quite a bit smaller and different but still close. There are red cluster flowering vines around that have longer skinnier leaves but still quite similar. I'll look into natives and report back.
-
I don't think Caapi is native to Florida/California (assuming that's where you are, I don't remember tbh)
Caapi is indigenous to South America, so unless you live there you won't find it on any native species list.
-
As others have said, if you are living in the US it's very unlikely that's a Banisteriopsis. It could be a Wisteria species, very common in gardening and with similar leaves. Unless your neighbors were ethno-pioneers a couple decades ago and somehow imported a cutting or seeds, that sounds more realistic.
The easier positive ID would require checking the flowers, come the season. Of course you could try to get it analyzed or to perform analysis yourself if you have the means, but unless the neighbors are the spooky kind, why not go and ask? I understand if you don't feel like ringing their bell and asking if they have Caapi vine growing in their garden (wink, wink) but wondering if that's Wisteria because you wanted to grow a bit for the beautiful purple flowers, and politely asking them if you can take a solid cutting, might save you a lot of hassle.

Good call mandrake. If it is in the US then it is very likely wisteria.
but wondering if that's Wisteria because you wanted to grow a bit for the beautiful purple flowers, and politely asking them if you can take a solid cutting, might save you a lot of hassle.
Excellent! +1 for making things easy. :)

It was definitely planted there on purpose years ago just never paid it enough mind until I walked up close the other day. Not a native that was just there. I can ask no problem but it also drapes into my cousins yard well more than enough to gather a ton if I wanted too. I feel I should just ask next time I see them out in the yard. Their kids were pretty "down" people so its possible they planted it there but idk. Yes HCC I'll try that out and if it doesn't pan out with a glow I'll hit you up.
