Title: New to Forum
Post by: Ben on May 23, 2016, 09:28:33 PM
Hi All!

I'm in Colorado.  Found the forum while surfing for Phalaris seeds.  Hoping to ground-cover a big patch I have that has been unsightly weeds in the yard for years.  This is taking some work -- the weeds are persistent.  But I'm keeping after it and hopefully will have a mini-meadow with tall grass in several months.

I have a question about seed sources.  I got two different types of P. brachystachys, one from Canada and one from France.  The Canadian were much more uniform and a little larger, and the French seeds were a lot less expensive.  I've looked everywhere around here and there is no local source for seeds.  Any suggestions?

Many thanks in advance for ideas for me.  I'm about to give up and order online again, but would prefer a different source.

Ben

Hi Ben,

Welcome to STS!

We have at least one phalaris expert member here, and I imagine he can help you with seeds or at least info on what you should be looking for. You have to be promoted to send PM's or access the sharing/trading forum, but that is very quick and easy here. Just a couple posts and you'll have full membership. Once you are, send AcaciaAve a message or make a post with a phalaris request in the Trading Requests area, and I suspect we can help you get that new grass patch started.

Take care!

Thanx guys, for your replies!

Will PM you, mj, when able to -- I'm not a 'member' yet.

Or give me a way to contact you.  It's a company north of Quebec.  I can send you a link.

Hey Ben: since you need to get some posts under your belt you can post that info right here and build up another post. I suppose that you could learn all you can about cloning grass and do that to increase your collection. Spraying your grass with active compost tea once a week during the growing season will help as will providing it with lots of nitrogen you could hand broadcast pellets of alfalfa that has a good balance of nutrients as well as growth regulation hormone and it's easy to find at fees supply outlets. Regards mj.

Ben: you can get an extra post by posting a request in the request section and you might get a response or three as well. Regards mj.

Hey Ben: you can check in the "Give Away" section and you can also post in the "requests" section as well. Here is the first give away for phalaris I found but you will have to check as they may have been changes since this was posted. Regards mj.

Hey Ben: "you can post that info right here"       Regards mj.

  @mj: Here's that link: https://shop.tranceplants.net/collections/all-products/products/shortspike-canary-grass-seeds?variant=3632241601
click the 'quantity' box for a few options re how much you are ordering . . .

Not sure what you meant by "have you found consistent light in your plants?"

So far the biggest problem with the large area has been that moderate rain washed seed from a lot of areas and I'm trying to go back and reseed the spots that don't have growth.  The germination so far has been really patchy but not enough time yet to consider it a fair trial.

Apparently I'll need to get more posts to access the sharetheseeds link you sent (topic 3798.0), but thanks!

Hey Ben: I can understand the frustration you must feel seeing your seeds that cost a lot getting washed away but I do hope that they are not going too far away, but I do understand. Perhaps you might be better off getting some starter trays along with some peat pellets and starting your grass seeds that way with plastic cover to keep the humidity high to maximize germination, then when ready simply plant the grass filled plugs spaced on a grid pattern and let the plug of grass grow out into the open space around it.
There has been some recent discussion about using alfalfa (or white clover) to enhance growth. It is a good source of nitrogen and other nutrients along with the fact that it contains a natural growth regulating hormone. Feed supply stores sell alfalfa pellets for pet feed just hand broadcast the pellets to feed and stimulate your newly developing lawn. Good luck growing your new "field of dreams". Regards mj.

your seeds getting washed away . . .
[/quote]

I thought about doing seedlings indoors & transplanting but decided to go straight in the ground.  It's not all that bad  --  I just need to keep after the weeds and I need more seed to continue overseeding.

Many Thanks for your notes!

Ben it just occurred to me that I remember asking a friend who used to work on a golf course to help me with a patch of dirt that I could not even get sod to grow on. He told me to make sure that the PH of the soil was right or I would just be wasting my time and money. You know how this goes, this stuff will grow throught the tarmack or concrtet of a landing strip but not next to your patio. Good luck mj.
