This is a wiki page but scroll down until you see "examples of underutilized species". It has a great list of good usable plants for those looking for more unheard of plants for permaculture or just to grow.

One of the reasons listed for being under utilized is a bad reputation for being "poor man's food"... if I recall lobster was once considered a poor man's food and fed to slaves, now it's so expensive I can't afford to buy it...amazing how people's opinions of food changes.
