Title: first seedlings.. do they look healthy?
Post by: SlowGrow on January 09, 2015, 04:59:07 AM
Hi guys, this is the first seedling ive ever owned so I just had a few questions. Do I water more frequent or less often then normal? Do these guys look healthy as of right now? And finally, about what size do I repot seedlings from a 1 by 1 inch starter like this? I got them from world seed supply a few days ago. Thanks - SlowGrow

The 1 inch square pots should be fine, but I think each seedling should have its own pot. Being so close together, if they stay there too long their roots could get completely tangled together and separating them might become difficult.

After moving a bit of the soil I realized they are already connected there is a nub in the center and these two guys are coming off the sides, in a field goal shape.. they seem to have one base and these two tops

They need more light. WSS cactus seedling have always been super etiolated whenever i've bought from them.  Really skinny bases that fall over super easy. Give them a nice light source and they'll fatten up and get healthier.  Otherwise they look fine.   I'm surprised they would sell such young seedlings.  They can have issues repotting.  And that's cool that it's one seedling with two heads. I've had a few of those pop up over the years.

You could have that under a 2 ft. T5 grow light and you would have plenty of light to spare, they do sell CFL grow lights, you would probably be fine with a 20-35W CFL grow light for that one twin seedling. One thing to note about CFL grow lights from my experience is I'm not sure they last as long as a traditional tube style grow lights. Just make sure the lights you get are grow lights meant for plants, otherwise the lights won't have the proper spectrum.

Thanks a bunch for the info, do cacti prefer 6500k or 2700k? I would assume 6500k but not sure..

I use 6500k for my artificial lighting, but nothing beats strong summer sun.
