Title: does the firmness of a cacti mean anything?
Post by: SlowGrow on October 31, 2014, 12:55:55 AM
Everyday I feel the firmness of my cacti and ive been wondering if it means anything between soft and firm. I notice they feel different everyday, sometimes they can be extremely firm and othertimes almost squishy. does anyone have any input on this? thanks!

The extremely firm ones are well hydrated and the ones that are soft like a sponge (not mushy) are just a bit dehydrated and are probably thirsty.  It's perfectly normal for slow growing globulars to get squishy in-between waterings. That's usually when i know i need to water them.  When winter comes i try to get them as dry as possible to go dormant. At that point they are usually very soft.
