Post by: gnosis on January 25, 2014, 03:53:00 AM
I hope I don't get in trouble for this :o
These are some of the plants that can be used
as natural remedies for sexual dysfunction.  This is
just me looking around online, I have not used them
personally so please do your own research.

1. Cola Acuminata
2. Ginkgo Biloba
3. Mimosa Pudica Linn.
4. Corynanthe Yohimbe
5.Citropsis Articulata
6. Eurycoma Longifolia
7. Tunera Diffusa (Damiana)
8. Lepidium Meyenii (Maca)
9. Tribulus Terrestris (Gokhru)
10. Passiflora Incarnate Linn.
11. Panax Quinquefolius L. (American Ginseng)
12. Withania Somnifera
13. Terminalia Catappa L.

This list is just random, I do not know which work better or even if they work at all.
Just want to try and give back  :)

I have tried both maca and american ginseng to see if it causes any luck up in my sex drive. I have been taking maca for several months now. At first it worked wonders in leveling out my hormones and give me massive increases in overall energy. It may have increased my sexual desire a little in the beginning but it was no ace in the hole for sex desire and capabilities. Otherwise I'd say it saved my life in terms of hormonal imbalances and energy. I'm young but always have been a super low key individual.

As far as the American ginseng I have only been drinking it as a tea for a week or more now usually twice daily. I think it may be promoting some sense of well being but I hear sometimes it takes a few months of daily usage to start working most effectively. It does though certainly have something my body craves in it. If I skip the time I'm usually drinking it I noticeably get a craving for the tea similar to the want for tobacco in my experience.

When choosing one of those to try it may help to consider that they can be subdivided into at least 3 groups to address different sources of sexual dysfunction.
Cardiovascular disease (the main cause in the west, thats why sexual dysfunction is a extreme warning sign for future heart attack and stroke)
Nervous exhaustion/stress (second biggest cause in the west)
Hormonal issues (not just limited to peri- and post menopausal women)

Some address more than one. For instance Withania could be expected to provide some help in either the stress type or the hormone type whereas, IIRC, Tribulus is mostly just for stress sexual dysfunction while Ginkgo would mostly just be cardiovascular.

I havent really studied the issue more than just in passing tho. I'm just aiming to prevent #1 and 3 with healthy diet and exercise and #2 with meditation. I aspire to be an 85 year old pervert some day ;)

It would interest me to know if Salvia miltiorrhiza root helps someone helped by ginkgo.

Sexual dysfunction is so strongly linked to cardiovascular disease that in the US having sexual dysfunction equals a 5000% increase in risk of being hospitalized (or buried) for cardiovascular disease. If Mr. Happy aint so happy, be sure to consider the larger picture before just getting a prescription for viagra.

Well I dont know much about this from first hand experience, but I have this book "Plants of the four winds The magic and medicinal flora of Peru" and it names a few you don't have listed yet. These all had impotence or sexual potency listed as something they're used for.

Chuquiraga spinosa
Corynaea crassa
Prosopis pallida
Isoetes andicola
Brosimum rubescens
Myristica fragrans
Heisteria acuminata
Oxalis tueberosa
Cinchona officinalis
Celtis loxensis

Some of these plants are taken on their own and a few are supposed to be mixed with other plants (so says this book anyways). Chances are I missed a few its a long book with 510 different plants and their uses and preparation in it. There are also other plants listed in there as aphrodisiacs. I suppose I could have added those too, but I figure these seemed more aimed at sexual dysfunction. If you're interested I can go back and make a list of those too.

I can offer one from South Africa: Bulbine latifolia (known colloquially as red carrot or rooiwortel in Afrikaans | I have also heard it referred to as ginseng in the Western Cape). The stem resembles a carrot with the inside being deep red to vivid yellow, depending on the provenance. In addition to being prescribed to cleanse the kidneys, for back pain, and as a general tonic, red carrot is also used for 'men's strength'. I spoke with many middle-aged men at markets while conducting ethnobotanical research and they all spoke highly of the plant, saying that it improved their ability to achieve an erection and improve their sexual stamina (one man even said that it had saved his marriage - that he wouldn't be able to perform sexually without it). It's interesting to me that this particular plant has become increasingly popular in the Western Cape and is currently one of the most frequently sold medicinals in the local trade. I love drinking this plant (particularly in combination with ginger). I haven't used it long enough to give a detailed experience report on the effects but it certainly boosts my energy levels and general feelings of well-being.

In addition, the fleshy leaves are wonderful for treating skin conditions and sun burns ;) I've attached a couple photos taken during my fieldwork. Great thread by the way!

Turnera Diffusa works well to ground you into being sexually present and lubricates your pineal eye to view your partner with clearer inner-focus and connectivity, no joke. Works well, not too potently, just enough to boost effectiveness.

I have no experience for dealing with this sort of thing (I am relatively young) but I am surprised not to see epimedium (several species are usually marketed as such) on the above list. Something about the active ingredient in viagra being a similar sort of chemical as some of the actives. Also I can vouch for Nymphaea caerulea (blue lotus) as an effective aphrodisiac generally.

I have used Maca on and off for several years now.  I cannot speak directly to the sexual portion but I can say it helps level my mood and provide a reserve of energy which undoubtedly translates to sexual function.

I found that it works best when cycling through it because the results are almost completely diminished after about three months of continuous use.

Passiflora Incarnate and Withania Somnifera are both interesting and good candidates!  ;D

A friend of mine(Yes, really a friend) experimented with yohimbine a while back and told me that it didn't do much other than increase his heart rate to uncomfortable levels. He didn't have 'ED' so maybe that's why it didn't help him.

Keep in mind that some of these sexual dysfunction plants can have some serious side effects. Make sure to research them before using. :)

Here is a few that help with balancing dopamine and serotonin, it's the dynamics of these two neurotransmitters that are the basis for how well we function on any level. Too much or too little of either transmitter will give us problems.

Thats why SSRI's rarely ever really work for anyone, they flush the system with serotonin which might help with anxiety but not with depression. The reason is that depression is a multifaceted problem that is both a severe imbalance on the chemical level (dopamine and serotonin) as well what you might call a spiritual crisis, treating one without the other gets you nowhere.

In traditional ethnobotatical medicine the plants are meant to be used for shorter periods, they are not meant to be the cure alone they are a part of it. Especially Bulbine namaensis are toxic if used over longer periods, modest amounts for shorter periods combined with physical exercise like running and weight lifting does wonders.

Ptychopetalum olacoides – Muira puama
Peganum Harmalla - Syrian rue
Bulbine namaensis
Mucuna pruriens

Nearly the same with my experience experimenting with yohimbe. Even small doses flush your skin with heat especially if taken several days in a row. Certainly makes the heart thump and slightly assisted me with erection but not entirely. More of a mind thing sexually for me either way and it didn't bring in that state of mind readiness.

Yohimbe is in fact entheogenic in high doses as well. But enough on that....

I recall the principle ingredient in at least one (the one I have personal experience with) of the earliest 'herbal ecstasy' was yohimbe.  It made my skin crawl in a very unpleasant way and the rapid heart beat was even less enjoyable.  I haven't revisited this plant as a more experienced subject but something about the first introduction has soured me on the plant and its quite obvious ability.
