Natural plant easter egg dyes
« on: April 05, 2015, 05:38:38 PM »

Disregarding religion, easter eggs are a nice thing, they have become more of a lifestyle, less a religious thing. What I really dont like to see is all the eggs dyed in those very shiny colors making them appear like they come straight from the lab.

I have been shown a lot of natural egg dyes for easter and still make my eggs this way today, even tho I'm atheist :) Eggs. Just eggs, eggs are great.

I will keep updating this because on the one side not everything will come to my mind instantly and its really exhausting researching all latin or english names with my crappy internet.

So here we go:

red sandalwood
beet
red cabbage
red mallow
red currant
apple tree bark
beech bark
brazil wood
cochineal
madder root
cherry tree wood
permambuco
Krameria Triandra

Campeche
vat
elderberry
blueberry
mallow weed

agrimony (reddish)
safflower
sandalwood
beech leaves (dry)
nettle leaves
elderberry leaves
mate
apple tree leaves
goldenrod
saffron
lilac flowers
chamomilla flowers
maple leaves (dry)
karrots (reddish)
ruddles dry flowers (tanish)
oak bark (brownish)
hazle leaves dry (brownish)
coffe (brown)
tea (brown / green / yellow)
onion peel (brown)
yellowwood
Reseda
tumeric root

wormwood
hyssop
mate (cold)
st johns worth
ivy leaves
horsetail
spinach
parsley

If not indicated different the process is straight forward, cook your plant material with your eggs. If you wish darker or brighter eggs, or softer eggs, put in the plant matter or your eggs before or after the other. Or add vinegar for lighter colors.

The dye attaches better if the eggs are first cleaned in vinegar and then rinsed. A iron piece, like a nail will make green and yellow more intense. K2CO3 and alum make stronger colors. Applying oil or other fat will make a dyed egg shiny.

I dont do anything fancy, for my eggs: I put a natural dye in the pot and cook it with eggs and water, cool them and that it.
