That is rot  :(. I would cut the tip off and try to save it.

Looks like it had too much water and is rotting, but it could be rotting for other reasons. :( It looks like a gonner to me. Areoles have to be pretty hydrated and healthy to take via graft, but it's possible.  Good luck!

Heya Tengukashi,

If that's the bridgesii cutting I sent you, I don't think it had roots. You want to keep unrooted cuttings nearly bone-dry if possible.
If it did have roots, they were probably very small. When the roots are small, they only need a very small amount of water and fast draining soil. The soil looks very damp, as though it's not draining.

I put it in bone-dry soil, I had just watered it after discovering the rot. I decided to water it in the hopes that it would rehydrate. Sadly, neither of my attempts to rescue it panned out :( I'm really bummed, that cutting had such promise. Your other cuttings rooted spectacularly, however. Thank you for helping me out, Happy. I'll probably buy a thicker cutting off one of the vendors recommended on here.

Did you get some cuttings? If not, send me a PM.
