A basic general knowledge of the principals and practices of plant propagation, greatly ehance the enjoyment ( and potentially the success rate) of our plant multiplication endeavours.
The following books, now in revised editions since I last read them, are highly recommended reading:
American Horticultural Society," Plant propagation"
by Alan Toogood.
Nicley illustrated basic guide for amateurs, easy to follow, not too expensive.
"Plant Propagation, Principals and Practices"
by Hartmann and Kester
A pricey tome, now in it's 8th edition. Essential reading for serious students of plant propagation. Older editions are also good and could be picked up a lot cheaper than the $100 bucks for the 8th ed.

Good call on the hartmann and kester text. Really good comprehensive look at the whys and how's of propagation. There's also a companion website for it that has more pics and diagrams...
I'll add another excellent reference book:
Seeds: Ecology, biogeography, and evolution of dormancy and germination. By Carol and Jerry Baskin
This is myfavorite and most utilized reference text!

Here's another nice searchable resource for propagating plants native to the US. The propagation protocol database hosted on the Native Plant Network website:
