Title: Red spots on a lophophora williamsii
Post by: New Wisdom on June 26, 2013, 05:58:13 AM
Okay, So my lophophora williamsii that I just got has developed red spots.  This happened before I even put it in soil. I just put it in soil and it seems to be getting worse. I have not even watered this plant. I thought that red spots were rot from over watering.

Can anybody give me some advise?  Thanks.

The plant seems like it wants water. It is loosing it's firmness like my other cacti have done in the past when they needed watering. But i'm afraid to since I just potted it and it has those spots on it.

I'm just a little worried because I literally just got this plant and I already love it. It's my first lophophora.

My cactus expert told me that excess sun/light will cause any cactus to turn reddish.

Hmm. Most of the people that grow lophophoras that I talked to said that it is 99% likely that it is either rot or red mites. Maybe even a scab. :(

Well red usually indicates too much light with baby cactus. That's an older one so it may be different.

I don't think it is because it appeared before it was even under light.

It could be a fungal infection..

Whatever you do don't water it for at least as couple weeks. Let it get settled in first.

Lophs sometimes gets those red spots and usually they are self-limiting. I don't know if it's fungal or what, but for right now just keep an eye on it and don't worry about it being soft. If it gets mushy then you can worry. Give her light and a nice airy spot and I think she'll pull through just fine.

Okay, I haven't watered yet. I'm trying to let it get acclimized and let any root damage heal before I water it. I took it a little farther away from my light incase it is getting burned.

She seems very healthy. But I always worry when my babies get sick.  :P

Three things; were the feeder roots (small hairy ones) trimmed off when you received it? How long was it allowed to sit after you received it? Did you sterilize the growing medium before potting it?

I have had this happen before and Bach is right, do not water it.

There was some soil around the roots. but there were a few small roots in it. It seems like the soil they left on it protected the roots so i didn't take it off to look.
I microwaved the soil for 4 minutes too.
And it sat for about a week after i got it in a dark dry place.

To answer your question, it wasn't just the tap root.

It's taking her over! The spots are hard like scabs.  They're growing.

I'm about to just cut her up and graft her.

I would not cut it as long as the spots do not move to the root. If possible keep the humidity down, 30% or less, then it should clear up.

Thanks.  It seems like the red spots stopped spreading.  She seems very thirsty, but i'm not going to water yet.

Thanks for the advise.  I'm going to take it and just let her be for now.

Well, the spots stopped growing and she's having new pups and growing again.  :)  Didn't even have to do anything.

i know trichocereus gets black spots that scab over as a result of bacteria (typically from overwatering)..

some similar process would be my guess...

also, i would try getting ahold of the vendor who sold them to you to see if he knows what is up.

Something interesting:
I have a peruvianas with the said black infection. It was outside and we had unusually high humidity plus rain storms.

I'm a cigarette smoker. On aNother forum, I read about a traditional method of healing cacti cuts with tobacco. (I have not seen any published information on this, it was a peruvian shaman) So I had the idea to blow smoke onto the infection. After 3 or 4 days of blowing smoke onto the black spots, the infection died back almost completly and new growth started.

Cure? Coincidence? I do not know.
hcc

p.s. I was smoking American Spirit brand cigarettes, the blue pack with the filters ripped off.
yes, I do need to quit smoking, even if its good for the cacti ;-)
