Datasheet: Acacia simplex

1. NOMENCLATURE

Synonyms: Acacia laurifolia, Acacia laurifolia, Acacia simplicifolia, Mimosa simplicifolia [wiki en 15.12.2015]
Common Names: There is no common English name, but it is called tatakia in Fiji, tatagia in Samoa, tātāngia in Tonga and Martaoui in New-Caledonia. [wiki en 15.12.2015]

2. DESCRIPTION

Plant Type: tree
Morphology: up to 12 m height

3. DISTRIBUTION AND ECOLOGY

Geographical Distribution: Native to islands in the western part of the Pacific Ocean as far east as Savaiʻi. It is also found in Argentina. [wiki en 15.12.2015]
Soil Requirements: sandy shore [worldseedsupply]

4. PROPAGATION AND CYCLE

Seed Germination Notes: Start out by sanding or nicking the seed coat to allow moisture to penetrate. Be sure not to go too deep that you damage the embryo. Heat some water to about 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60°C). Add about 1/8 bleach, and let the seeds soak for 15 minutes. Afterwards, place your seeds in a folded damp paper towel. Be sure the towel is only damp, and not overly moist. Cover the seeds lightly with plastic wrap in a clean place with the nicked side facing down. Maintain a temperature of 70-80 degrees. The seeds should swell after a day or two. Any seeds that fail to do so should be nicked again and soaked in the bleach water solution. If a seed develops mold while in the paper towel it can be resoaked in bleach water to kill the mold and may still sprout. Just be sure to keep it isolated from the rest if this happens. Seeds can be transplanted to a well-draining seed starting mix once they have developed significant tap roots.  Also check out the Hot Water Tek Guide. http://www.worldseedsupply.com/germinating-hard-shelled-seeds-such-as-mimosa-acacia-and-bundleflower-the-hot-water-technique/ [worldseedsupply]

5. PROPERTIES AND BENEFITS

Documented properties: The tree is used as a toxin in fishing. It incapacitates the fish, but it is apparently not harmful to people. [wiki en 15.12.2015] Contains hallucinogenic (N,N-DMT).
Parts of the plant with therapeutic/psychoactive value:
Bark: N-methyltryptamine, N,N-dimethyltryptamine, 2-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-B-carboline
 Leafy stems: N-methyltryptamine, N,N-dimethyltryptamine, 2-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-B-carboline, N,N-formylmethyltryptamine, Traces of
 another unidentified alkaloid
Stem bark: Total alkaloids 3.6% of which 40% N-methyltryptamine, 22.5% N,N-dimethyltryptamine, 12.7% 2-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro
 β-carboline.
Twigs: Total alkaloids 0.11%, of which N-methyltryptamine 26.3%, 6.2% N,N-dimethyltryptamine, 5.8% 2-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahyrdo

Glad to see you added some moar data on this plant! I've been meaning to do more research on this fella, but have gotten a bit behind in my various 'studies' over the years...

Your simplex looks great! Almost looks ready for a trans-potting (or planting). Have any others survived? What kind of soil mix did you use? Also, are you keeping them inside for the winter (if so, what are the conditions inside)-another member had asked me about growing them indoors but I didn't have a clue and would be interested to know what works for you.

Kudos,

I haven´t grown them yet. I´ve moved to another city still searching for an appartment and proper job. Can´t find a good keeper for my plants. Maybe someone else knows more regarding your questions. How long will the seeds approximately last?

Acacia Seeds tend to be viable for years after harvesting so I wouldn't worry too much about them going bad. The seeds were harvested in the middle of may 2015 and I, being an ignorant noob, lost about half of the crop to wevils.  :-[ I found that keeping them in a freezer 24/7 in sealed containers exterminated my problem and, IME seems to have no observed impact on germination rate, which seems to have stayed the same since I harvested them. If stored under the proper conditions, I'd be willing to wager that they could last decades.
