Hello to All, glad to find this site!
« on: December 07, 2014, 07:21:38 AM »

Oops, my bad. Where ever my first entry went, no one knows...so to begin again.

I am new to this website. Glad I found it though. I am not a very good gardener and need to learn what I am doing wrong. I have recently retired and will have plenty of time on my hands.

I was looking for information on mushrooms. Particularly the ones that may be able to cure cancer. I read the rules and saw that I won't be able to do much with mushrooms but found a new hobby.

I have a pic of a plant I had in my front garden when I lived in the Republic of Panama. My gardener chopped it down and I do not know what it is. I will not be able to upload it until tomorrow and it is quiet late here. I am anxious to begin though and hope to learn a lot from STS.

Being at this site has taken my mind off my troubles and relaxed me somewhat. Anxious to see what everyone has to suggest and show.

Welcome to STS Jasmine!!

There is no need to worry about being a beginner gardener here.  Everyone is very willing to help anyone start out!  And mushroom cultivation talk is allowed here other than those that contain psilocybin for obvious reasons.   Looking forward to seeing that picture!

Thanks for joining,

Hi bluejasmine,

Welcome to STS.   :) Congratulations on your recent retirement, and we can certainly get you going with a lovely garden and gardening tips.

There was an article linked in the chat area yesterday about a native fruit called paw paw with anti-cancer properties. A member in North Carolina was able to find seeds in the past, and I am going to look next fruiting season as well (I'm in NC also).

See you around!

edit: Found the link for you... http://althealthworks.com/1134/the-health-benefits-of-paw-paw-vitamins-minerals-and-possible-anti-cancer-effects/ ...courtesy of member nobody.

also, Annona muricata - Graviola is another species in the family to look that EIRN mentioned.

Hi Bluejasmine,

Welcome to STS!

I have some book recommendations for you about Medicinal Mushrooms:

This first one would be a good overview:
MycoMedicinals: An Informational Treatise on Mushrooms, by Paul Stamets assisted by C. Dusty Wu Yao

Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms, Third Edition, by Paul Stamets

Two more books that I have not read but are highly recommended by Paul Stamets are both by Martin Powell:
Medicinal Mushrooms: A Clinical Guide
Medicnal Mushrooms: the Essential Guide

And I would strongly recommend looking into Reishi mushrooms. They've been used for thousands of years and are considered amongst the most powerful of natural medicines in China. To try your hand at growing them, I'd recommend looking into Fungi Perfecti's Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) Indoor Mushrooms Patches.

Here's a Reishi grow log from a member here, Isaak's Reishi Grow Log

Another powerhouse are Turkey Tail mushrooms. They're one of the easiest mushrooms to grow. Often times when growing Shiitake mushrooms on logs, Turkey Tails take over if they grow naturally in the area. There's a "Best Scenario Case Study" where Paul Stamets healed his mother's breast cancer with various mushrooms remedies and in personal communications with him, he claimed it was mostly Turkey Tails. Here's Paul Stamet's list of recommended reading about Medicnal Mushrooms and Cancer.

Welcome to STS,
Hcc

Welcome to the site, were glad that you made it here ;)

Mushroom is also one of the things that i love growing, unf due to a long period of lazyness i lost my culture bank, i had both ganoderma lucidum and trametes versicolor, but i plan on growing them again this year, so im sure i can share a wedge for you to grow it ;) just stay arround.

Again welcome and get active on the forum, is very worth it. It doesnt matter that you dont have plants to share, you will very soon.
