Spiral Agave.

They make tequila out of agave?
-
Yeah they do :) Makes good syrup as sugar substitute. Agave Tequilana.
My favourite sweet plant so far: Hovenia Dulcis "Oriental Raisin Tree" sweet plant I like least: Stevia
Why Hovenia ? Its tasty and I am attached to my specimen that I got to germinate after a lot of hard work on the seed, I want to do some research on it.

That's fantastic! How long did it take for the seeds to germinate? Any special procedures used to induce germination I.e bottom heat etc
-
yeah, do everything to them you dont believe they can survive, they'll enjoy it. Nearly lost my teeth on the seed coat so I then repurposed a kitchen machine and made a seed tumbler lined with sanding paper, tossed the seeds and a few lintels in there for good measure. A but later the lintels where gone, ground to dust, the seeds barely impressed :D So finally I nicked some with knifes and burned through the coat of others with a hot wire cutter. I know I am cruel but it worked, I then soaked all until they showed signs of germination, after messing with the seedcoat they soaked, they wouldnt do that before. I will feature te plant in my log.

That's pretty intense. I've heard about scarifying using a match box and emery board but the degree you went too is awesome. What was the germ rate like? Nature. Always amazing. You can tell that those seeds were made to survive harsh climates

Germination was low yet but its coming, I know it its powering. Btw I started out with a sandpaper lined matchbox but after a fee day sitting like a crazy infant that found a rattle ... I decided I want to go a different route. Also the Matchbox on the lab shaker didnt do much.
-
Good analogy. Baby with a rattle lol. I'm guessing agave is also a succulent?
-
Highly suspect so, HCC might know. EIRN has a Hovenia Dulcis way larger than mine, he has acuired it as a plant, I guess its raised from cutting considering the troubles :D
-
Hovenia. . That's Latin for spiral agave?
-
Nope :) Its "Agave" like in "Agave Tequilana"

Oriental raisin eh? Deff gunna look that up. I read in a book one time that only five percent of plants have been researched and documented. That's awesome eh.
